Good morning. My name is William Sisson, North America Executive Director for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, based in New York City. WBCSD is a global, CEO-led organization of more than 200 leading businesses, including 44 Asian companies, working together to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. It is a great honor for me to address you today, and I appreciate the opportunity to share with you my thoughts and observations on the growing importance of the environmental, social and governance, or E-S-G factors and responsible investing.

According to a McKinsey report, global sustainable investment now tops $30 trillion—up 68 percent since 2014 and tenfold since 2004. The acceleration has been driven by heightened social, governmental, and consumer attention on the broader impact of corporations, as well as investors and executives who realize that a strong ESG proposition can safeguard a company’s long-term success. A 2020 report published by the International Institute for Sustainable Development estimated that ESG investments will reach $160 trillion in 15 years, confirming what we all know in this room. The growth of ESG investing will accelerate further in the coming years and will be fully integrated into all asset classes.

We don’t have to look any further than the current economic and political context to illustrate the growing relevance of non-financial issues impacting business. In the United States, when President Joe Biden begins his four-year term next week, we anticipate he will aggressively shift our environmental and social policies and encourage broader sustainable investing regulations. Since his party – the Democratic Party – will control the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, he will be at a great advantage to create a regulatory environment that is more supportive of ESG investing and disclosure, particularly in climate change.  His administration’s policies also will serve as a catalyst for investors and companies based or traded in the U.S.

ESG issues have been increasing in importance for the past several years and begun to dominate business leaders’ concerns.  In each of the past few years, we saw higher than normal rates of flooding and droughts, and wildfires that ravaged Australia, the Amazon Jungle, and millions of acres along the United States’ West Coast. Last year’s World Economic Forum report on global risks found that an overwhelming majority of CEOs ranked the environmental issues – such as extreme weather and biodiversity loss – as the top risks in terms of impact and likelihood over the coming decade. This is the first time one category has occupied all of the top slots since the report was launched in 2006.

Less clear, though, is an understanding of why these issues link to value creation. In other words, how exactly does a strong ESG proposition make financial sense to a company?

ESG links to cash flow in five important ways: (1) facilitating top-line growth, (2) reducing costs, (3) minimizing regulatory and legal interventions, (4) increasing employee productivity, and (5) optimizing investment and capital expenditures.  There’s no doubt these issues have a significant impact on the bottom line.

This link was affirmed by analysts at my organization who evaluated the share performance of 31 North American-member companies across a variety of sectors that have strong profiles in improving the environment, addressing societal issues and strengthening governance policies.  During the period marked by high volatility due largely to the COVID-19 pandemic, this group of WBCSD members -- each listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ -- outperformed the S&P 500 Index by an average of 9.4%. Many factors can be attributed to an organization’s performance, but it’s highly likely the companies that integrate material ESG elements into their businesses are better managed and more resilient to shocks and volatility. At the end of the day, it’s only logical that CEOs who consider ESG issues to be an integrated component of their business strategy and decision-making will see increased business resilience and revenue growth.

In October, our organization and member companies brought our membership criteria in line with the urgent challenges facing our society by adding five new requirements to our membership conditions. The new conditions will let our member companies focus on putting credible, science-based action plans into motion to transform our economic systems and strive for a more just and inclusive society for all. If any of you would like to know more about these criteria and my organization, I encourage you to contact my colleague, Wei Dong, who heads our office in Beijing. He’d love to hear from you. I wish you a successful event today and a wonderful Chinese New Year in less than a month.  Thank you very much.
