ESG Disclosure Guide for Chinese Enterprises' Overseas Investment (2021 Trial Version)

The "ESG Disclosure Guide for Chinese Enterprises' Overseas Investment (2021 Trial Version)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Guide") is based on the laws and regulations related to overseas investment, relevant guiding documents on responsible "going out" and green development of the Belt and Road of Chinese enterprises, ESG disclosure regulations of regulators, multi-sector ESG disclosure guidelines and international initiatives. The Guide aims to help Chinese enterprises identify the important environmental and social impacts of their overseas investments, to respond to the demands of stakeholders, to help them avoid and manage the environmental and social risks of their overseas investments (including direct and indirect investments), and to establish a better image of Chinese enterprises as responsible international investors. The Guide recommends that enterprises should take into account the six key principles of the "social impact" policy.

The Guide recommends that companies disclose and improve communication with stakeholders based on the six principles and on multiple ESG issues, mainly in the form of ESG disclosure reports. In order to achieve good communication with the host country stakeholders, we still need two-way and diversified communication methods. In this regard, enterprises can learn from the "Community Communication Manual for China's Foreign Contracting Industry (2021 Edition)" to identify different stakeholders at the host country community level and establish communication mechanisms and channels in a more targeted manner. The Guide also received technical support from many experts and scholars during the preparation process, and thanks to the support of the Ford Foundation (USA) Beijing Representative Office.
